Vendors selling seafood on the floor of Lautoka Market’s new wing can request for a table.
This was the comment made by the Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed Anees Khan.
This comes after members of the public raised the issue that it was unhygienic for women to be selling their produce while sitting on the floor.
A market vendor who wished to remain anonymous said the decision was on the vendors whether they wanted to sell their produce on the floor or on a provided table.
“Some vendors have been approached to use a table, but they prefer to sit on the floor,” she said.
Mr. Khan said there were six tables at the seafood section that the vendors use to sell nama, lumi and other seafood.
“These are the foldable tables. There are some vendors selling from the floor at the seafood section and when asked if they needed tables, they said they prefer to sell on the floor. This is usually the crabs and the prawns,” he said.
“Council has enough tables and we will provide them upon request, particularly on wet weather days.”
